There’s a brand new resident in Amroth! He’s called as part of a campaign to Turn the Tide on Plastic.
Amroth and Saundersfoot Community Councils launched their Clean Seas project, with the unveiling of the Clean Seas Community Sculpture by Eluned Morgan AM on Friday.
Designed by local sculptor, Gideon Peterson, the Clean Seas sculpture is 14-foot by seven foot and has been constructed from stainless steel and filled with ‘beach clean’ plastic.
It is designed to make a striking impact to communicate the need to Turn the Tide on Plastic.
Amroth will be the permanent home for the sculpture, but it will also spend time in Saundersfoot and be available for display in coastal communities across Pembrokeshire.
Visitors are encouraged to take a selfie with Bertie and make a pledge to Turn the Tide against Plastic. Selfies can be posted at #cleanseas
The sculpture forms the centre piece of both community councils work to promote the United Nations Clean Seas campaign as part of the Visit Wales 2018 Year of the Sea, with all local businesses signing pledges to Turn the Tide on Plastic.
The project has been led by the two community councils and supported by Arwain Sir Benfro, PLANED and Valero with contributions of ‘beach clean’ plastics, from local schools, Surfers Against Sewage and Keep Wales Tidy.
A challenge has been given to local school children in the two community council areas to guess the number of plastic bottles contained in ‘Bertie’, with a prize to the young person who gets nearest the total before the end of this school term.
