Beautifully lyrical folk music from Sweden and the British Isles comes to Burnett’s Hill Chapel, Martletwy, this month.
Daniel and Emma Reid are touring the UK performing at festivals, churches, arts centers and balls (playing for dancing).
Emma states: “It will be a real adventure. We are bringing our caravan, our two little kids and a child minder with us for a six-week tour interspersed with holiday. We’re slightly nervous, but mostly just extremely excited!”
Emma Reid grew up in Northumberland and started playing the violin aged three. The folk music development agency Folkworks was based in Northumberland and gave Emma many incredible opportunities; weekend workshops, summer schools and tours with the best professional musicians on the scene.
A core figure in Folkworks was David Oliver, of Hexham. He invited Emma, then aged 14, to join the Hedgehog’s Skin Ceilidh Band. This was a brilliant experience and the best possible folk music education.
At 14, Emma also became determined to one day study at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm with Ellika Frisell, one of Emma’s foremost role models.
Emma ended up being her student for two years and now Emma and Ellika are colleagues and have a duo together. Emma loves playing in duos and trios because it gives maximum freedom and spontaneous interplay. The Royal College of Music was also where Emma and her future husband Daniel met.
The Sweden-based duo-couple Daniel and Emma Reid perform songs, self-penned tunes and traditional material from Sweden and the British Isles, all with a remarkably close and spontaneous interaction. The eclectic mix of instruments and vocals combined with sheer musical brilliance makes for incredibly varied, evocative performances.
Daniel and Emma Reid have performed on intimate and major stages across Sweden and the UK. Both their debut album, Innerligheten and the recently released Nära and Kära have received rave reviews and radio play on both sides of the North Sea. Daniel and Emma have collaborated with many outstanding international musicians, including Ian Carr, Nikolaj Busk (Dreamers Circus), Roger Tallroth (Väsen) and Eskisehir’s Symphony Orchestra.
