An ongoing battle to see an up-to-date survey carried out on Tenby’s historic town walls, appears to be no closer to a conclusion.
Members of Tenby Town Council have made several requests in recent times to Pembrokeshire County Council that a check be made on the ancient walls that surround the town, as they are concerned about the condition of the walls in certain areas, with a survey not being carried out for some time.
Correspondence on the matter from Cadw’s regional inspector of Ancient Monuments and Archaeology, Polly Groom, came before members at their meeting on Tuesday night.
“I am not aware of any structural survey which has been carried out on the Tenby Town Walls,” she wrote.
“However, as you know, the walls are not in Cadw’s ownership or guardianship and, therefore, we do not have either authority or obligation to carry out such surveys.”
Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane responded to the correspondence by stating that she didn’t think that the Cadw representative understood what the town council were asking for.
“I think she’s got the wrong end of the stick here, as we know that Cadw don’t own the town walls,” she remarked.
“But we need someone to step in and step up to take care of our historic walls,” added Clr. Mrs. Lane.
Clr. Mrs. Christine Brown felt that both PCC and Cadw were again “copping out” on the matter.
“Someone in authority needs to tell us what needs to be done about the condition of the walls. We are disappointed that PCC don’t seem to want to do anything towards our walls,” she said.
Clr. Mrs. Thomas suggested that PCC be copied into any response to Cadw.
