Find a hidden jewel
Beetles are the hidden jewels of the bug world. There are 4000 species in the UK so it is easy to find one you have never seen before! Lots of beetles are iridescent in the sunshine, so good weather is an excellent time to look for them. The rose chafer has green wing cases, the rosemary beetle has purple stripes on a turquoise body and the dead nettle leaf beetle has green, blue, orange and gold on its body! See if you can get a photo of a beautiful beetle.
Fireman’s Carnival Costume Making Workshop
On Wednesday, August 3, the Fireman’s Carnival will once again be taking place, and anyone can join in the fun as a walking entry. But to do this, you need some sort of costume… so come along this Saturday, July 23 from 2pm to 5pm to Augustus Place Community Hall to have a go at making one. Please bring along things to use – large cardboard boxes, small tubs and boxes to stick to them, old sheets or duvets or clothes that you don’t mind cutting up or gluing things to, scraps of material… anything you think may be useful. The usual craft supplies will be available, and hopefully we will be able to share out what people bring so that everyone can make something they like! Everyone is welcome, but please could children be accompanied.
An antidote to boredom
If you cannot find anything satisfying to do, this can be a source of stress. One way to avoid this is to concentrate wholly on whatever it is you do have at hand to do, no matter what it is, and try to achieve the very best results you are capable off. You will find that not only does the time fly, but that you will get great satisfaction from it too. So next time you can’t find anything to do that you really enjoy, just do whatever little task is waiting to be done, and make it your very best effort at doing that task. See what a difference it makes.
Grotto Day
Monday, July 25 is Grotto Day. In the Christian calendar, it is St James’s Day. St James is the patron saint of oysters. After the traditional feast of oysters, children collected the oyster shells and made a grotto, a little cave decorated with seashells, with them. Over time, this day became known as Grotto Day. It is a good time to collect shells and use them to make a grotto or decorate a sandcastle. How many different types of shell can you find? Can you identify them?
Films4Tenby Double Bill
This Tuesday, July 26, there will be a family friendly film screened at the De Valence Pavilion at 4.30pm – Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and this will be £3 entry for everyone.
At 7pm, there will be a screening of Operation Mincemeat, that will be the usual entrance of £5 or £4 for members of Films4Tenby. The film is based on Ben MacIntyre’s book and stars Colin Firth. The story follows the Allied forces trying to fool the Germans into believing that they will invade Greece. Everyone is welcome!
Leaky Lifesaver
This is a good activity if the weather stays hot and you are heading for the beach, or even in your garden. Get an old water or pop bottle each, put some holes in the bottom of it – but be careful doing this. Put a bucket each in a row a certain distance from the sea or a paddling pool or a large tub of water if you are in your garden. Players race to fill their bucket from the pool or sea by carrying the water one bottleful at a time. But you have to hold the bottle over your head as you do so. The first player to fill their bucket wins.
Community Edible Garden
There is lots of things to pick in the garden on Sutton Street at the moment. There are some broad beans, some cut and come again lettuce, some spinach and variegated kale, some spring onions and some courgettes are on the way. Thanks to everyone who is helping to look after it. Remember, everyone is able to join in at any time. The chest full of tools etc in is behind the bench under the shelter at the back. You can do a bit of weeding, or pick some of the vegetables before they go to seed, or pick up litter to keep the place looking lovely. You can even do some watering. But please also just enjoy the garden!
