An all-terrain mobility tramper and beach wheelchair are now available for visitors to borrow on the Stackpole Estate in Pembrokeshire as part of the National Trust’s work to improve accessibility in the great outdoors.
The vehicles, which are free to use, were purchased with the help of visitors’ kind donations to enable more people to enjoy and explore Stackpole’s coast and countryside.
Over the winter, the Trust’s ranger and visitor experience team were busy improving the paths across the estate, with three recommended routes now available from Stackpole Centre for accompanied trampers, assisted wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The routes include Stackpole’s woodlands at Lodge Park Woods, the designed landscape at Bosherston Lakes and dramatic coastline at Stackpole Quay and Broad Haven South, with a handy accessibility map guide available upon arrival.
Angela Fenton, a local visitor to the estate who has been unable to walk unaided following knee difficulties and unsuccessful surgery, is already making the most of the new mobility vehicles.
“I’ve always enjoyed visiting Stackpole, especially Bosherston Lakes to admire the view and waterlilies,” she said.
“Since developing knee problems, it’s been tricky to manage this longer walk, so I’m delighted to now be able to use the tramper to re-explore one of my favourite places and spend time with visiting family and friends,” Angela enthused.
“I’m already planning my next tramper adventure with my granddaughter over the school holidays.”
Speaking about the accessibility improvements, Alex Moss, National Trust Stackpole’s visitor experience manager, said: “It’s with the support of our visitors that we’re able to offer the tramper and beach wheelchair for use at Stackpole.
“We expect both mobility vehicles to be very popular and look forward to welcoming more visitors to the estate to use the paths and explore this special place.”
Both vehicles are free to borrow from Stackpole Centre, with a refundable deposit of £10 required on the day. Donations are gratefully received towards the upkeep of the equipment.
Pre-booking is advisable, so if you’re interested in using the vehicles, please contact the Stackpole team on 01646 623110 for more information.
