Pembrokeshire County Council’s ‘access officer’ has agreed to hold a meeting with councillors in Tenby to look at ways of making the resort more wheelchair friendly.
Town councillors highlighted the issue recently after receiving a letter from a local resident who wrote to them pointing out that it was a shame that the resort’s beaches were difficult to access for disabled and elderly people.
Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, the town clerk Andrew Davies told members that PCC’s access officer Alan Hunt had indicated that he was happy to come and meet with councillors on the matter.
The recent correspondence also enquired as to whether Tenby could introduce ‘beach wheelchairs’ to the resort, to help people access the beaches as they do in Saundersfoot.
“We looked into this a few years ago, and the Tenby and District Lions were offering to fund them, but there had been issues with where such wheelchairs would be stored etc,” explained the Mayor, Clr. Mrs. Sue Lane.
Clr. Mrs. Sam Skyrme-Blackhall asked if there was anywhere down the harbour area that could be used to facilitate such a service.
Clr. Mrs. Lane suggested that the town council write to PCC to see if they can provide a facility down the harbour area for storage for beach wheelchairs.
