A well-known South Pembrokeshire young woman, Lynda Perkins (pictured), has this week been named as the NFU/NatWest Wales Woman Farmer of the Year.

The announcement was made at the Royal Welsh Winter Fair.

Now in its 12th year, the competition aims to recognise the often overlooked contribution that women make to Welsh farming and previous winners have gone on to be appointed to key roles in the industry.

Lynda Perkins is the only daughter of David and Julie Hooper, of Mountain Farm, Cresselly, and is now married to Neil and lives at Island Farm, Dinas Cross near Fishguard.

Lynda has a passion for pedigree Suffolk sheep which she originally started a 'hobby flock' a few years ago and has since developed to become a major part of the farming enterprise Island farm which also runs a commercial flock of around 1,800 ewes.

As well as farming, Lynda has also developed the caravan and camping site on the farm together with a separate cottage enterprise. She also uses her catering skills to run a small catering service, using local produce including their own home produced lamb and beef.

Lynda is the current secretary of the Dyfed Suffolk Sheep Breeders Association, is actively involved with the local school and was secretary of the Pembrokeshire RWAS Ladies committee last year.

Lynda and Neil Perkins have three young children. As winner, she receives £500 and an engraved crystal fruit bowl.

Martin Doyle, of NatWest Agricultural, the competition's sponsor, said: "I have to say Lynda met all the criteria and surpassed our expectations. She will make a very good ambassador for all the other women who farm in Wales."
