A pensioner has ended up with an expensive court bill after being caught stealing a chocolate bar and a pasty from Tenby Post Office.
Seventy-two-year-old Lawrence Roach Evans, of Gilgal Terrace, Bryniwan, Pembroke Dock, admitted a charge of stealing a 65p Bounty bar and a pasty value at £2.65 from the Post Office located on Warren Street, when he appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court that the defendant is known to the staff at the Post Office, and when he entered the store on February 15, he was believed to have stolen the pasty in the first instance and when the CCTV was checked, Mr. Evans was also seen to take the Bounty bar.
The court heard that Mr. Evans had similar matter of theft on record and was also subject to a conditional discharge after being charged with criminal damage back in January.
Defence solicitor Craig Davies told the court that his client recently suffered a head injury and didn’t remember the incident, but fully accepts that he stole the items on the day.
“He wholly accepts that he entered the store where he’s well known and took the Bounty and expensive pasty,” said Mr. Davies.
Magistrates told Mr. Evans that it was sad to see someone of his age in court before fining him £40 for the offence and ordering him to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge. He was also told to pay £3.30 compensation to the Post Office in Tenby.
