The Mayor of Pembroke has left his role after being summonsed to appear in court to answer charges relating to historic rape and assault charges.

“In the light of current circumstances Councillor David Boswell has decided to stand aside his role as the Mayor of Pembroke until further notice,” said a spokesperson for Pembroke Town Council.

Clr. Boswell, who was elected Mayor of the town in May, and also serves as county councillor for Pembroke St Mary North, is due to appear at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court next month, charged with six counts of indecent assault and one count of rape against two victims who were aged under 13 at the time.

The offences are alleged to have been committed between 1991 and 1994.

A spokesperson for Pembrokeshire County Council said: “This is a Police and CPS matter and the Council can make no further comment at this time.

“Pembrokeshire County Council continues to keep under review all necessary safeguarding measures pending the outcome of any prosecution.”

The court hearing is due to take place in court on Wednesday, September 13.
