A man from Pembroke who drove a vehicle without a valid licence or insurance has been charged in court.

Twenty-year-old James Waco Evans, of Ashdale Lane, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to driving a Ford Ka, on Woodbine Terrace, otherwise in accordance with a licence.

He also admitted driving the vehicle without a valid test certificate or third party insurance.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan told the court that police officers on duty in Pembroke shortly before 1 pm on September 2, identified Mr. Evans as the driver of a vehicle coming towards them.

“Officers pulled him over and carried out checks as they didn’t believe that he held a licence to drive. The defendant made full and frank admissions to officers. He said that there had been a mechanical fault with the car when he purchased it and that he was taking it to get it checked out when he was stopped,” she explained.

Defence solicitor Jonathan Webb told the court that his client accepted that it was a ‘foolish reason’ to drive the vehicle and that he had been caught red handed.

“He has an unenviable antecedent history for a myriad of misdemeanours, but is currently volunteering at a charity shop in Pembroke, with a view to them taking him on. Mr. Evans has made strides to change his life around,” he added.

Magistrates fined Mr. Evans £120 for the offence and endorsed his licence with eight penalty points.

He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
