A female motorist from Milford has been banned from getting behind the wheel of a vehicle for 18 months after being charged with drink-driving.

Forty-one-year-old Marsena Katarzyna Smarul, of Hamilton Terrace, admitted the charge when she appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court that a member of the public called the police at around 8.30 pm on November 25, as they were concerned about the manner that Ms Smarul’s Peugeot 406 was being driven on the Great North Road.

“He car was slowing down to allow traffic to pass and she was keeping the headlights on a high beam. When a police officer stopped and spoke to her in her vehicle, she told him that she’d been drinking,” added Ms Vaughan, who explained that a test showed that the defendant was driving with 69 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the prescribed limit.

Defence solicitor Mark Layton told the court that Ms Smarul was in the process of going through a divorce at the time and that it was a difficult period for her.

“She had been drinking on the day because of the difficulties the divorce process was giving her. Ms Smarul says that she has no previous convictions, not in the UK nor in Poland,” added Mr. Layton.

Magistrates disqualified Ms Smarul from driving for 18 months and fined her £275 for the offence.

She was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
