A man who assaulted a police officer and a hotel security guard after a Valentine’s Date with his pregnant partner turned sour, has been told that he is extremely luck not to be sent to jail.

Twenty-one-year-old Kyle Allerton, of Coombs Drive, Milford Haven, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to admit a charge of assaulting another male; and a police officer.

He also pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage, after knocking off the security guard’s glasses.

Prosecutor Dennis Davies told the court that the incident started on February 14 when the defendant assaulted a security guard working at The Lord Nelson Hotel, on Hamilton Terrace.

“It was around 10.45 pm and Mr. Allerton who had been eating at the establishment with his girlfriend approached the security guard on duty and said ‘yeah I’ve got a problem’ before punching him to the face.

“The male fell to the floor, and told police afterwards that he’d also felt kicks to his body, but was unsure who had done that.

“The punch caused the victim a bruised bottom lip and soreness to his neck. Police were contacted and spoke to the defendant before arresting him on suspicion of assault,” explained Mr. Davies.

At the police station Mr. Allerton became verbally abusive towards police officers.

“One minute he was crying and the next he was threatening. Officers were forced to carry him to the cell. When they tried to remove the defendant’s clothing, he kicked out and cause an injury to the lip of one of the officers,” he added.

Defence solicitor Jonathan Webb told the court that his client denied being responsible for any kicking to the security guard.

“It was Valentine’s night and he was out with his girlfriend. He says that he was pushed away by the security guard, and overreacted.

“When officers restrained him onto the floor at the station, whilst literally cutting the clothes off him, Mr. Allerton kicked out as emotions were running high. The officer admits that they didn’t think it was intentional - but reckless.

“Mr. Allerton was jailed back in 2017 for getting into a bit of trouble. He had no business in getting involved in this incident that was occurring in the beer garden that night, and no business assaulting the security guard. To make matters worse, he was not compliant with the arresting police officers,” added Mr. Webb,

Probation officer Julie Norman confirmed with the court that Mr. Allerton who worked as a roofer had served a period of imprisonment after being sentenced at Crown Court.

“There was an incident at the beer garden of this premises that night. He was out for a meal with his partner who was pregnant at the time.

“He shouldn’t have got involved, and fully regrets punching the security guard, who was only trying to do his job that evening and close the gates.

“Mr. Allerton has tried to stay out of trouble in recent years, and he’s disappointed to find himself back in court,” she added.

On sentencing, magistrates told the defendant that he was ‘extremely lucky’ not to be sent into custody, before handing him a high level community order for 18 months, to include a 15 day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement; a thinking skills programme of 19 days; and 250 hours of unpaid work.

Mr. Allerton was ordered to pay a total of £224 in compensation to the security guard, and £100 to the police officer

He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £90 victim surcharge.
