A man from Cardiff has been fined for drugs possession in Saundersfoot.

Thirty-one-year-old Paul Anthony Hortop, of St. Andrews Road, Heath, pleaded guilty to possessing 1.67 grammes of herbal cannabis, when he appeared at Haverfordwest magistrates court on Tuesday.

Prosecutor, Mr. Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that police had called at an address in Saundersfoot at Nyth Gwennol on August 29, to speak to the defendant about an unrelated matter.

“Whilst at the property, officers could smell cannabis, and found a small amount next to Mr. Hortop’s bed, which he said was for his own personal use,” he explained.

The defendant’s solicitor, Mr. Matthew Greenish, said that his client, a painter and decorater by trade, didn’t drink alcohol, but liked to smoke cannabis.

“This has been a bit of a wake-up call for him, and he’s told me that he doesn’t use cannabis anymore,” he said.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month conditional discharge on Mr. Hortop, and ordered him to pay costs of £85, a £15 victim surcharge, and £180 court charge.
